SEMARNAT and CESPEDES Recognize Holcim Mexico Programs for Reducing Greenhouse Gases

June 03,2014

• Obtains GEI2 recognition for its efforts to combat climate change

• Since 1990, the company has reduced its net CO2 emissions by 19%

Mexico City, Federal District, June 3rd, 2014. -  The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) and the Commission on Private Sector Studies for Sustainable Business Development Coordinator Council (CESPEDES) gave GEI2 recognition to Holcim Mexico for its programs to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions and combat climate change.

Since 2002, Holcim Group established the goal of achieving a 20% reduction by 2010 in net emissions of CO2 per ton of cement material produced, with reference to the emission levels of 1990. That goal was achieved in 2009. Holcim Mexico contributed a 19% reduction.

Currently, it aims to reduce net emissions of CO2 by 25% by 2015, considering the same baseline year. In 2013, Holcim achieved an approximate 24% reduction globally.

"At Holcim, there is a profound relationship between sustainability and value creation. Thus, sustainable development is part of our business strategy. We offer products and services backed by an excellent environmental performance," indicated Ibette Sosa, Environmental Manager at Holcim Mexico, after receiving GEI2 recognition “for the Mexico GHG Program."

The country´s new Climate Change Act came into force in 2011 with two main goals: to assess the volume of greenhouse gas emissions and strengthen the technical capacity to mitigate them.

Within this legal framework, the SEMARNAT and CESPEDES established the "Mexico GHG Program," a nationwide scheme of voluntary GHG accounting and reporting for companies to progressively develop strategies to improve their environmental performance through reporting and validation of their inventory of GHG emissions; third party verification of the inventory; establishment of a mitigation program; revision of CO2 emission reduction; and improvements from the efforts carried out.

This program receives technical support from the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

Since 2004, Holcim Mexico has participated as a founding member in the GHG program, in which its members have pledged to make public their annual inventories of greenhouse gas generation. From year to year, the company has received recognition for said program in the GEI1 category, which recognizes those companies that voluntarily produce a report on their CO2 emissions.

Today, Holcim Mexico obtains the GEI2 recognition, which the environmental authority grants to companies that, besides publishing their inventory, show that their inventory was validated by verification by an authorized third party.

Since 2003, Mexico Holcim reports annually to its Swiss corporate on its emissions inventory through a sheet designed by the WBCSD and a protocol-based calculation for CO2 from the body itself.

In Mexico, through the National Chamber of Cement (CANACEM), the cement industry signed a National Voluntary Mitigation Action (NAMA) to voluntarily reduce their emissions of CO2       and achieve a 19% reduction of emissions as an industry for the period 2010 to 2030. Holcim Mexico is one of the main promoters of the initiative.
