• Mexico reaffirms its leadership in Latin America with the top number of enrollments in the region

Mexico City, April 20, 2014. – With 169 sustainable building projects registered for the 4th cycle of the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction, Mexico came in number two out of the 129 countries with the highest number of proposals recorded, surpassed only by India with its 482 projects. The number of Mexican proposals is higher than nations considered the authorities on the subject matter, such as the United States (153) and China (98).

In Latin America, Mexico reaffirmed its leadership by outdoing countries like Argentina (83), Colombia (75), Nicaragua (62), Brazil (46), Costa Rica (30), and Chile (28).

“We are very proud of the level of participation and enthusiasm of all the architects, planners, engineers, urban planners, law firms, construction companies, and Mexican students who presented their proposals for sustainable construction. We exceeded the number of Mexican projects that competed in the last cycle by four percent. This shows Mexico's leadership in global sustainability,” said Mariana Torre, country representative of the Holcim Foundation.

According to the final breakdown of the total number of projects enrolled with the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction, based in Switzerland, Mexico registered 84 projects in the main category (for companies, offices, building professionals, and organizations) and 85 projects in the “Next Generation” category (dedicated to students within university programs), thereby positioning the country in the third and second places worldwide, respectively.

“The growing number of Mexican projects that seek to win a Holcim Award is truly representative because it proves the changes in the way new buildings are being designed. It demonstrates that the vision of having a more harmonious environment, a dream that is more respectful of the environment, is already part of the essential rules for the country’s social, economic, and cultural development,” added Mariana Torre.

A jury of renowned specialists will evaluate the projects registered and give out the awards, first on a regional and then a global level, in 2015. In October of this year, we will announce the Latin American winners at an awards ceremony to be held in Medellin, Colombia, on October 2nd and 3rd.

“We are confident that the Mexican projects will play a prominent role in both the regional and the overall competitions. It will be a grand celebration of new ideas for sustainable construction,” said Mariana in closing.

There are 6,103 projects from 129 countries on five continents that will compete for two million dollars in prizes. The registration of projects that participate in the Holcim Awards is divided into five regions around the world: Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa-Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.

A total of 100 prize winning projects were awarded in the first three competitions. In the second Holcim Awards competition, almost 5,000 projects from 120 countries were submitted. In the third cycle, the number of entries rose to 6,065 proposals from 126 nations around the world. In this fourth cycle, a total of 6,103 entries were registered from 129 countries across the globe.

The Holcim Awards is a global competition that is held every three years in an effort to inspire the imagination of architects, planners, engineers, city planners, governments, project owners, builders, and students. The competition offers them the opportunity to present their engineering and civil construction projects, plus their landscaping, urban design, and infrastructure projects, and materials, products, and construction technologies.

The Holcim Foundation is supported by Holcim Ltd and its Group companies in around 70 countries and is independent of its commercial interests.
